| en_ES |

dc.description.abstracteng | This article explores the concepts of "nation" and "identity" in the work of the Bolivian -Canadian composer Alejandro Saravia, born in Cochabamba, in 1962. Saravia’s work is introduced within the crucial debate taking place in Canada about the immigration processes, exile and diaspora, and the way in which these phenomena affect the emigrant cultural identities and their monolithic forms of belonging. It is increasingly evident that the displacement (violent or not) produces in the individual (refugee, exiled, expatriate, displaced etc.) a great instability regarding their concepts of nationhood and identity, as understood traditionally, that is to say, when the cultural identities and the forms of belonging are not questioned (in Benedict Anderson sense). While the majority of the exiled authors in Canada deeply regret the loss of their origin, their homeland and their language, there are however, some authors such as Saravia, producing works where it is common to possess not one, but multiple identities; or a non- determined identity (Bhabha, 2004), in a constant flow, which is built and rebuilt on the basis of the interaction or contact with other individuals or cultures, as it happens in the multi-ethnic and multilingual city of Montreal, central space of his novel Red, Yellow and Green (2003). This article defends the hypothesis that Saravia is a unique author in the latin-canadian context by the fact of not only denying his bolivianity (as he does in his novel), but also rejecting any kind of belonging to any geographical or symbolic area. | en_ES |
