El sistema de salud en Colombia hace parte del sistema de seguridad social regulado por el gobierno nacional, por intermedio del Ministerio de la Salud y Protección Social. Ley 100 de 1993 lo instituye con el nombre de Sistema General de Riesgos Profesionales. Este sistema es el conjunto de entidades públicas y privadas, normas y procedimientos, destinados a prevenir, proteger y atender a los trabajadores de los efectos de las enfermedades y los accidentes que puedan ocúrreles con ocasión o como consecuencia del trabajo que
desarrollan. Dentro de este sistema se definen las actividades de alto riesgo para el trabajador y una
de estas incluye las radiaciones ionizantes; según la legislación colombiana todas las radiaciones ionizantes tales como rayos X, rayos gamma, emisiones beta, alfa, electrones y protones de alta velocidad u otras partículas atómicas, deberán ser controladas para lograr niveles de expansión que no afecten la salud, las funciones biológicas, ni la eficiencia de los trabajadores.
